A Recent Living Room Project

When recently working on an open living room design, it was important for us to clearly understand the desired functionality of the space and how to incorporate items of interest to the homeowner that told their unique story. Our starting point was the layout of the space. A vast living room by most standards, there were architectural elements to work around and others to work with. It was paramount to the homeowner that the room feel chic and sophisticated without being “precious” or unapproachable. It was also important to incorporate a TV viewing space, a reading nook that felt akin to a piano lounge, and space for a baby grand piano. This was a tall order of many elements to be combined - but one that started with functionality first. This was not to be the living room of days past that wasn’t used and served as a formal space for company only. This was a room to be truly “lived” in, but also was used to entertain company and needed to be a step above the family room, but just as inviting and usable.

At Resonance Interiors, we believe that the design process should be a collaborative journey. We take the time to get to know our clients, understanding their lifestyle, their design preferences, and the story they want their home to tell. This allows us to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful and reflective of their unique personalities.

How to Personalize Your Interior Design

There are many ways to personalize your interior design. Here are a few insights:

  • Use your favorite colors: Your favorite colors can help to create a sense of comfort and familiarity in your home. When choosing colors for your interior, be sure to select hues that you find appealing and that work well together. We also recommend evaluating your selections in various light throughout the day and consider the sheen desired as well.

  • Display personal items: Displaying personal items, such as photos, artwork, and souvenirs, is a great way to add personality to your space. These items can help to tell your story and create a sense of warmth and intimacy. They can reflect your past achievements and experiences or perhaps evoke something more aspirational for who you are becoming.

  • Choose furniture and accessories that reflect your style: The furniture and accessories you choose for your home can also be used to express your personality. When selecting furniture and accessories, look for pieces that reflect your taste and style. Consider scale, material composition and the overall “vibe” the piece lends to the space.

  • Incorporate unique details: Adding unique details to your interior design can help to create a space that is truly one-of-a-kind. This could involve anything from using unusual materials to creating custom-made furniture. We really enjoy even modifying existing furnishings to breathe new life into a piece the client already owns and perhaps cherishes, a bespoke twist on an already beloved item.

Bringing It All Together

This living room project really brought to life all of the benefits of a bespoke space. We were able to divide the room into the desired functional sections simply by placement of a rug, furniture groupings and of course the piano. The space was further customized by utilizing century old glass bottles from a family business as shelving decor. We employed items and carvings from departed relatives international travels throughout the space, lending some global influence and flair. We were able to matte and frame art that was sentimental to the homeowner while keeping it in context with the design. We even sprinkled pottery made by the homeowners child around the space for more layering of unique expression.
