There’s a reason the phrase “a room of one’s own” holds so much weight. In a home filled with daily routines, family life, and constant activity — the primary bedroom becomes more than just a place to sleep. It becomes a quiet retreat. A space to reconnect, recharge, and slow down.

As a residential interior designer, I believe every home deserves a sanctuary — especially the spaces where your days begin and end. The design of this room reflects that belief, blending personalized comfort, refined materials, and elevated functionality to create a peaceful, grounding escape.

The Vision: Calm, Functional Interiors with Elevated Living

For this primary bedroom refresh, we began by considering how the space should feel: calm yet inviting, understated yet personal. The shelter bed — custom upholstered in vintage velvet — anchors the room with softness and scale. Overhead recessed lighting, thoughtfully placed on dimmers, offers quiet control of mood and function.

Across from the bed, a built-in bench sits beneath a double window, providing both hidden storage for bulky bedding and a tailored reading nook. A custom linen covered cushion and coordinating valance, in a wool blend from our trusted partners at The Shade Store, soften the architectural lines while adding warmth and texture. Hunter Douglas Silhouette blackout shades adorn all windows and a sophisticated wool drapery trimmed in Samuel & Sons Mohair, set on iron and lucite hardware, complete the layered window treatments — a polished yet practical touch for restful sleep.

Flanking the window seat to the left, a built-in with granite countertops and custom bookshelves — backed in Nobilis’ luxurious raffia and silk wallcovering — offers functionality and quiet luxury. To the right, a sleek gas fireplace, integrated media storage, and a cozy seating area with a Rouleau club chair and rorschach-finish side table invite lingering with a book, some television viewing or simply unwinding at the end of the day.

A hand-knotted wool rug in tonal dune and charcoal grounds the space, providing both visual interest and plush underfoot comfort — a signature of our New England interior design philosophy that prioritizes natural materials and tactile warmth.

Design Details That Reflect You

At Resonance Interiors, we believe your bedroom should reflect your lifestyle as much as your aesthetic. In this room, that shows through carefully chosen furnishings that blend function with beauty:

✔ A reclaimed pine desk and wrought iron chair for quiet work moments.

✔ Custom granite details for practical elegance.

✔ Layered natural textures — wool, linen, raffia — that promote calm and well-being.

✔ Discreet storage that keeps life’s essentials tucked away, so the room feels effortlessly composed.

This is the kind of intentional, personalized bedroom refresh we love creating — whether through our full-service New Vibration or Room Refresh design offerings. Because true luxury isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about how a space supports your daily life.

A Sanctuary for This Season — And Beyond

Your primary bedroom should be more than a backdrop. It should be a place where life slows down, stress fades, and you reconnect — with yourself, your partner, your space.

This Lexington, Massachusetts retreat does exactly that: combining thoughtful design, functional details, and elevated materials to create an everyday sanctuary that feels as good as it looks.

If your bedroom — or any space in your home — could use a refresh, we’d love to help. Let’s create a space that supports your lifestyle and reflects your story.
